TSUNAMI WARNING !!! MAURITIUS MAY GET HIT TONIGHT!! MARCH 28

Postby ccat » Mon Mar 28, 2005 23:04

according to cnn an earthquake off the coast of sumatra tonight may have generated a tsunami that may be travelling south and west and so a tsunami could reach mauritius within a few hours.
tsunamis reach speeds in excess of 500 mph

please notify local authorities and friends on the island

Tidal Wave

Postby MmeTortue » Tue Mar 29, 2005 9:24

Thanks for the warning!

We watched BBC News last night and heard about the earth quake and the tidal wave warning. News must have spread like a fire as everybody (at least in our street) went outside and people stayed in the streets up to 4am.

I just returned from the sea side (9am). The sea stayed at its usual level during high tide last night, and the fisherman already went out on the sea earlier today.

Best regards and again thanks for thinking of us!

It is my pleasure Mma Tortue,
Best wishes from Kiel Germany.

for english speaking folks who wish to get informed about tsunamis, google may provide good reference. just search for tsunami.
many national maritime offices and national weather orgs provide detailed info.
as for Mauritius the december tsunami produced a high tide that was 1.5 meters higher than usual flooding some beaches and a few streets on east coast but there was no "wall of water" as in SE Asia.
there is no continental shelf that would build it in such a scale for one and the reef around the island serves as wavebreaker.
still a flood occurred as the tsunami approached the island.
march 28 earthqake in sumatra did not produce a significant tsunami it seams tho perhaps there was just no data due to lack of deep sea warning system that is buoys that register changes of sealevel in the Indian Ocean.
New earthquakes around sumatra or along SE Asia or perhaps at another corner of the region may occur and so see the news before you travel.

best wishes,
ac
