Trekking

Beitragvon stone_rose » Di Sep 04, 2007 12:35

I intend to do some trekking in Mauritius when I next come.

I have found 2 sites so far.

http://www.trekkingilemaurice.com/

http://www.yemayaadventures.com/index.php

Has anyone used them? Your feedback would be much appreciated.

I went with trekkingilemaurice.com. All I got to say is FANTASTIC!!!
I did two treks, Le Morne & Trois Mamelles. The views were breath taking and the trek to Trois Mamelles was just exhilarating. Our guide, Yan was great. Thoroughly recommend doing his treks.

Thanks stone_rose, but if that's a per person price, then it's expensive. I think I'll take my chances and venture into the undergrowth without a guide :-)

The 20 pounds per person should be worth it.....

It maybe expensive but for something like the Le Morne trek, the only access onto the trail is to go through private property. A guide would have some arrangement with the property owner. It's best to pay rather than getting done for trespassing.

It's probably worth it in that case (only), then again to get right to the top of Le Morne, one needs either a long ladder to walk across, or as some other trekking companies are offering, using a line to pull oneself across a cleft.
There are many other treks which can be done in Mauritius without the need for a guide, just a little tenacity and some balls of steel ;-)

Here are some examples I have attempted:
Lion Mountain, Tamarin Mountain, Piton de La Petite Riviere Noire, Le Pouce, Pieter Both, Signal Mountain, Corps de Garde, Nicoliere Mountain.

You can get more details from the book "Mountains of Mauritius, A Climber's guide" by Robert Marsh. It is out of print, but you can get photocopies in the libraries around Mauritius.
