In the year 2001 one Mauritian in one thousand was imprisoned. Exactly 1144 were serving a prison sentence in Mauritius.

Half of the sentences were related to drug offences.

626 persons were imprisoned for drugs offences, 219 for offences against individuals including murder and 207 for offences against property. The remaining 92 persons have been convicted for other offences.
752 of the detainees were on remand.
Of these, 367 were detained for drug offences, 167 for offences against individuals including murder, 180 for offences against property and 38 for other offences.
