Obtaining a driving licence in Mauritius

Postby Devora » Fri Nov 06, 2009 8:41

Hi,

My International driving licence (issued from my country) will expire in December. Any ideas how I could obtain a local one ? Where to apply? Should I have a printed picture? Cost? Thanks in advance.

Hello Devora,

How are you?

If you follow this link, you'll find some answers to your questions. Too bad the website is not that user friendly....

I am fine. Thanks, ud! You are always ready to help with info, to answer our request, to give a feed-back... What a good forum administrator you are!

I've fount the info from the link you gave me, even something more I've been looking for... like residence permit, education, etc.

It is not clear how long I should wait to obtain this driving license, but I hope will not be long... Just hope, because here with government services I've experienced a lot of patience, as I've been put in positions to wait long almost for every paper I've been requested... But, it is how here things are. Not so user friendly, as you said. :-)

Hello Devora,

I also tried to get a local (Mauritian) driving license some years ago. At that time I received a tiny white paper with my personal details and was told I should present this 'paper' together with my German Driving licence if in need. When applying for the fourth paper the officer told me that I wouldn't need any local driving license as I'm the proud owner of an International Driving License issued in Germany - valid in connection with my German Driving License.

As I also drive in Australia and New Zealand I opted to keep the International driving license - which is also accepted here in Mauritius - and dropped the plan of a Mauritian Driving License alltogether...

From your comments Mme Tortue and wickus I understood that from Mauritius I can obtain an International Driving License, based on the validate period of my Domestic Driving License. That's mean I can drive here 6 years more. :ploppop

Hello,

I must admit you got me worried a little bit. :pp)

I've checked and apparently the UK is the only country exempted. If you've obtained your driving license from any other country. You'll need to apply for an international driving license which you will obtain in your country of origin. :Q

Man I'm glad I won't need to get an international driving license when I'm back for holidays next month.

It is exactly - I have my BG Driving License, but I can drive with it only in BG. Before to move to Mauritius I obtained from BG an International Driving License that is valid for one year. I may use it here only with my BG license. BTY, I've not had problems with local road police since now, but as my license will expire next month I have to renew it here, because I live here.
What I understood from web page I may apply for an International Driving License as I am foreigner. Those days will go and will see how it will be.
