Important notice about
the issue of new passports
as from 1 November 2007
On 1 November 2007 a new Passports Act enters into force. One of its requirements is that
new German passports (bordeaux red cover) should contain a chip with the holder's fingerprints.
Owing to technical problems in introducing the new regulations, for several months as
from 1 November 2007 the German Embassy in Antananarivo (via the German Honorary
Consul in Mauritius) is likely to be unable to process applications for new passports.
Temporary passports (green cover) and children's passports, however, will not be affected.
If your current passport is due to expire before mid-2008,
we therefore strongly advise you
to apply for a new passport before 1 5 O ctober 2007.
If you apply for a new passport after 15 October 2007, it is likely that the German
Embassy will initially only be able to issue you with a temporary passport (valid for one
year maximum). Such a temporary passport does not entitle you to visa-free entry into the
United States of America.
We would be grateful if you could pass this information on to your German friends and
If you have any queries, please contact the German Embassy in Antananrivo at tel. 00261-
