Somebody was advising that in the departure hall,they would only
except local money. for food/drink any advise as i donot wish to bring
a lot of local currency back.

I do recall that 4 years ago they accepted local currency but I cannot say what the situation is now.If you do have any local currency left, why don't you exchange them, prior to passing immigration, at one of the banks at the Airport.

Duty Free and the Restaurant (which I think doesn't deserve this name, at least not at the moment...) also accept Euro, maybe even GBP... However it might happen you will receive any change in Mauritian Rupee. It's better to have some small Euro pieces at hand.

As for me I always buy my bottle of water and beer in our local supermarket before leaving for the airport, as I refuse to pay the ridiculously high prices in the departure lounge.
