Learning French in Mauritius... Possible?

Postby kia » Sun Jun 04, 2006 3:17

Hi all,

I speak beginner French and I'm keen to become fluent.

I'm curious about the possibility of language school or immersion courses in Port Louis (or another location in Mauritius).

Do you have any advice? Is it possible to become conversant in French while living in Mauritius?

Thanks for any assistance you are able to provide!

Hi,

you can learn french at the Alliance Francaise in Port Louis (Bell Village). Most people in Mauritius don't speak french properly, because they speak with the influence of the creole language.

Best regards

French in Mauritius

Postby camillewhite » Fri Apr 17, 2009 10:19

I'm just about to land in Mauritius and am keen to get French lessons, just wondering how you went??? I've contacted Alliance Francaise and they have responded saying they only have beginners levels 1, 2, 3. I've already completed levels 3, 4 and 5 and wanted to continue on from this point if possible

Alliance Francaise is very nice I am just attending a beginners course there. The price is 3000 MRU for about 18 days I think. The advanced courses should be also around this price.
Our course is on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 1.5 hours since 10th of February and will finish about 12th of May. Some days in between were no school. So I guess it's about 18 days.

The number is 2122949 and the School is in Bell Village beside this new Chinese Cultural Center

Is there any way to get hold of a private teacher as well?
The language schools don't fit me , cuz they usually start at 4pm, which is too early for me, since I usually work at least until 5pm.

So i rather would want to got to either courses during the weekend or have a private teacher come to my office or home during the weekend.

Does anyone have such connections?

Hello Camille,

Maybe if you could relate the beginner levels to the School Certificate/Higher School Certificate Level, you would be able to know where it stands.

I'm guessing level 5 is somewhere around that corresponding threshold.
There are loads of SC/HSC level French private teachers around and I don't think there are any issues pertaining to you taking a French SC/HSC exam private....or someone correct me if I'm wrong.
