Foreign Medical Doctor to Practice in Mauritius

Hello All...

I've been too excited to be relocated into Mauritius in a very near future, from my working place, to setup new environment, business, and offices in Mauritius.

I've also been reading postings here and very much helpfull, information from all of you guys... I'm impressed that this forum can help us alot, to be made well-informed about relocation to Mauritius.

I have a family of four persons, two sons aged 4 and 3 yrs, my wife (a Medical Doctor) and myself - just a simple working guy

I've never been to Mauritius either.

I feel it is not fair for my wife to keep following where I will be located, and since she has been practicing as medical doctor in Jakarta (Indonesia) for more than 5 years, in several hospitals (public/private) and several specialist-clinics across Jakarta... so I may need to confirm that my wife will be able to practice as a medical doctor in Mauritius.

My wife graduated from Jakarta (Christian University of Indonesia) as a full honour Medical Doctor, and has taken the medical doctor sworn in 2003, and has been full time practicing ever since.

Area of our rented-home most likely will be either in West (Port Louis) or in North... not confirmed yet.

What is the procedure, requirement, conditions for my wife to apply for her license to practice as medical doctor in Mauritius?

Does she need to take any further exam or just some proved documents and/or certificates that she is a medical doctor and her experience will be sufficient to get a license for her?

Will she be able to open her own clinic (let say in our rented home)? Or she can only practice in Hospital(s)?

Will the license to practice be granted to her, only after she has a job offered from Hospital or she can get the license by just opening our own clinic at home? Or do we have to rent a shop-houses to open for a clinic?

What is the procedure to open a Clinic in our rented-home? I hope that is allowed...

How about medicines, will private clinic charges be usually include medicines for patients? Where can we buy these medicines from? Imported or local distributor or controlled directly by goverment?

If my wife could only be working in Hospital (private / public), any roughly estimation how much would be her earning per month for a 5 yrs practicing experience, emergency medical specialist, cosmetologist and dermatologist specialist?

We may need to really know whether my wife will be able to get her license to practice as full time doctor, before we can decide whether to proceed with the relocation - even though this is a company request of relocation.

I really hope someone out there who is either Mauritians, or some foreigners stay in Mauritius would be willing to help or guide me about the above please.... any input to me would be much appreciated.

Wish I could be of help but your questions are very specific so I can only recommend you get in contact with the Ministry of Health. Details to be found on their website

I know some doctors here, most of them have two jobs: one in a hospital or a clinic, and another one in their own 'cabinet' where they treat people against cash.

The official governmental hospitals do not charge any money from their patients so you can surely imagine that they do not exactly pay high salaries either. As for private clinics I've no idea about their salary level.
