Exchanging currency

I have read somewhere (I now can't find where) that it is better value to exchange UK pound into Rupees when at the airport because the exchange rate is better. At the moment I can get 49.6 rupees to £1. Does anyone know whether it is better to wait until at Mauritius?
Also should I get rupees or US dollars? (another question sorry)

you should take your credit-card with you.
And "Change at Shibany" means: the Shibany changing office in the mauritian airport, when you arrive.
Just left-hand, when you leave the airport-building.

My sister who works in Mauritius told me that the currency they are using is the Rupee. Travellers cheques usually exchange at a better rate than cash. ATMs are widely available in most towns and hotels.
