Cyclone Season

Beitragvon MmeTortue » Mo Dez 11, 2006 15:50

Ciao Marco Polo!

The season has already started as we welcomed 'Anita' end of November/early December. It usually ends in April but there were years when we still had cyclones in May.

By the way I completed Stefans cyclone name listing. Let's hope we are not going to meet all these 'ladies' within the coming months...

Panda
Quince
Rabeca
Shyra
Tsholo
Unokubi
Vuyane
Warura
Xylo
Yone
Zouleha

Best wishes

Hi Mme Tortue,

thanks for the explanation. Btw I was three times in Mauritius, always two weeks in the months march and april. I never met a cyclon there. Perhaps they are not too often. Wish you good luck this season, hopefully the weather remains nice.

Ciao, Marco Polo

'stupid' cyclone names

Beitragvon MmeTortue » Di Dez 12, 2006 8:16

Hello Guys (simply assuming you are all male...)

Thanks for your responses. The cyclone names are made up by several meteo organisations around the Indian Ocean. As far as I know Madagascar, Comore islands, Reunion island, Mozambique and other countries in or surrounding the Indian Ocean are part of the committee that puts together the list.

this is what wikipedia have to say:

South-west Indian Ocean

The cyclone authorities in Mauritius give names to Indian Ocean cyclones that form or move into the ocean west of 90 degrees East longitude and south of the Equator. (Cyclones that were given a name by the Australian authorities get a new name when they move west of 90 degrees East.) The lists work similar to those of Atlantic and Eastern Pacific storms, but because they are in the Southern Hemisphere, the years are counted from July of one year to June of the next, rather than January to December of the same year. Also, new names are made for every storm year and not recycled cyclically like the North American lists.
