Hi there.. I read german but difficult to write, so hope english is ok..
I arrived in Mauritius end-August, am here until Christmas, working in the capital, Port Louis... 33yrs, from UK & New Zealand I arranged to stay at a B&B/Chambre d'Hote when I first got here, and have decided to stay there the whole four months.
I looked for WG/shared flats - but found absolutely NOTHING. I don't mean to be too negative, but it really does not seem to be a living arrangment that exists over here. Finding an appartment was also difficult - minimum 6 months rental agreement required, so no good for me, but might work for you guys..
L'express newspaper is the main source of property listings - see www.lexpressproperty.com
. There are lots of agencies who list there that it could be worth contacting directly. But don't expect good customer service - its not like in Europe! If you're living alone I'd take care to ensure its safe (not ground floor) and if you will have a car, get secure parking. Its not as safe as in Europe over here, lots of petty theft, and break ins. Not too much violence though, so dont be scared by my saying this.
I'm staying at this place - http://www.ecomauritius.com/
. I've no idea if they have space in Oct/Nov - you'd have to check directly. Could be good as a first place to stay whilst you find something for longer term. Its at least 30mins drive to Moka though, and you'd NEED a car. Otherwise I agree with the other advice - you might find an appartment rental in Flic en Flac - try www.homelidays.co.uk
for provate appartment rentals - also might be a good first place whilst you look for longer term. And much nicer than living in Moka.
If you have a car it will be easier to get around, especially in the evenings. I negotiated a rate of R.600 a day by emailing ten companies for quotes for a long term rental.. just be cheeky!
Back to accommodation - if you are coming here to work, its worth asking your employer to help you find somewhere.. good to have help from a local.
Good luck, and happy to have a beer when you're over here! It is possible to meet people here, and I'm starting to have fun, but its not easy at first :)
