Indian Ocean Island Games 2019 (Jeux des Îles de l’Océan Indien 2019 )

Mauritius is preparing to host one of the major events of the African sports calendar: the 10th Edition of the Indian Ocean Islands Games; from the 19th to the 28th of July 2019. Mauritius is hosting this major sports event the third time, after 16 years. The ninth edition of the IOIG was held on the 1st to the 9th August 2015 in Reunion Island, where Mauritius won a total of 185 medals (66 gold, 49 silver, 70 bronze) and ranked second after the host country who claimed 209 medals.

The Official Song – Tam Tam dan Zil

The Kokofaya group’s song “Tam Tam dan Zil” is the official anthem of the Indian Ocean Islands Games (IOIG) 2019. The song was chosen after a selection exercise, following a competition launched by the 2019 Islands Games Organizing Committee. The composition was created by Thallie Ann Seenyen (songwriter and performer), Jerry Constance (songwriter, composer, keyboardist), Patrick Desvaux (guitarist, musical arranger), Denis Serret (bassist) and Frederic Porlin (drummer). According to Thallie, the song highlights unity and represents the pride of being islanders.

The Torch Relay

An extravagant welcoming ceremony in the presence of Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth was planned when the torch was brought to Mauritius from Reunion Island, on Saturday, July 6th.

      For the first time since its creation in 1979, the Indian Ocean Islands Games will make way for beach volleyball. The Beach Volley Arena, located on the beach of Mon Choisy, will host the competition. Judo and athletic events will take also place in Rodrigues. 43 Rodriguan athletes have joined the national team of the Republic of Mauritius for the 10th Indian Ocean Island Games. The athlete numbers have significantly increased since its inception, with around 1,500 participants in 2007 and 2 000 athletes expected to participate in this year’s edition.
